Working with Sandtex

Celebrating their 60th anniversary

Here at The Meadows, it really is a full-time job keeping up with all the outdoor maintenance. We live in a 1960’s farmhouse set amongst 6 acres. It really is a lovely spot with old meadow land surrounding us with lovely big trees. In-fact its was the trees that grabbed me all those years ago when we first looked around. I know we are lucky to live here, it is truly a magical spot, however what comes with our heavenly oasis is a lot of hard work and cost. We don’t have the money to pay people to do all the work so much of our weekends involves painting, grass cutting, tidying etc

A little background about Sandtex®

From its humble beginnings in Sale, Manchester, as part of the Cement Marketing Company Ltd. Sandtex® has grown from two-products to become a leading brand with its masonry portfolio, Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Sandtex’s products aim to transform the outdoors – from exterior walls and front doors, to wooden and metal furniture and accessories. As part of thee Crown Paints family, it sits alongside Crown and Sadolin.

Painting

Painting and staining are big jobs here. Windows, doors, outbuildings, sheds, treehouse and fences. I have always used Sandtex outdoor paints thanks to their range of colours and quality so I was very happy to be invited to work with them on our most recent and much needed project.

Recent project

The windows

It was perfect timing to have the chance to work together. Our windows were looking tired especially the large ones around our patio area. I spent the best part of a week sanding down and preparing.

I wanted a change from white so opted for a lovely soft green called Bay Tree. I had been toying with changing from white for a while. A lovely calming colour that blends in well with the outdoors and works well against the pot plants and flowers and those that climb.

The Pergola

IMG_9425

A few years ago, we built a pergola on the back of the house and it has been like adding an extra room as we have lived out here come rain or shine.

img_7228

With panoramic views of the garden and fields, it really is a super place to unwind. I painted the timber in black Sandtex 10 Year Exterior Satin. For our roof we used bamboo cane panelling under plastic corrugated which meant the roof was totally waterproof and still looked attractive.

The paint works nicely against the bamboo cane, planters and lampshades. It has a kind of Ibiza beach hut vibe about it! I love the colour so much I may paint all our windows in Bay Tree.

IMG_2076

The pergola is ever changing with new furniture this year. The climbers are now really taking hold, slowly covering the structure. I used a white Climbing Rose, Wisteria, Passion Flower and a Clematis.

IMG_2080

The Treehouse

A few years ago I gave our little treehouse a makeover. It was a shed that a friend was throwing away so we bought it home and reassembled it. We made put it on stilts (a big high five to James as this really pushed his DIY skills).  I painted it in a lovely bright blue but over the years it began to look shabby so worked with Sandtex and it was so much fun giving the little house a proper makeover. I used Seclusion on the outside and it still looks as good as new. Such a great colour that nestles amongst the greenery really well.

The Before

The After

All the other makeovers have been so much fun and I have enjoyed collaborating with Sandtex Paints who provided the paint for the three makeovers. It is long lasting, easy to apply and offers a lovely range of colours. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions, I’ll happily help where I can.

Collingwood Candles – The Art of English Elegance

IMG_1869

Collingwood Candles is a joint venture between sisters Alex and Tora Young. Alex is a former Marketing Director and Tora is a former Film Producer. The idea for their range of candles actually came about because of Tora’s long career working in the film industry. The more time she spent in trailers, dressing rooms, hotel rooms and stars’ houses the more she realised that they had one thing in common – they all smelled amazing. She realised it was because they were filled with the luxury candles that are an A-list must-have! Making a trailer feel like a place that she wanted to be, in the middle of an industrial estate, or during a week of night shoots, was a big ask – but she realised that if a gorgeous smell transported her and offered an element of glamour, then she was halfway there. Following two years’ research and development, Collingwood developed a unique blend of coconut wax, which is more eco-friendly than soya, as no trees need to be cut down, and mineral wax, to give the best burn. The inspiration for the Collingwood fragrances comes from a desire to capture the essence of English elegance and style – with the garden, the countryside and the sea at its heart.

The Particular People

IMG_1765

A year ago Lynn decided to concentrate full time on my ‘passion project’ Particular People. I am constantly exploring the abstraction of natural forms and then distilling these ideas into minimal, pared back designs.

My latest designs have a gorgeous muted natural colour palette, inspired in part by the beautiful Jurassic Coast where I live. My favourite collection at the moment are my looser Plant Studies, created during the spring of the first ‘lockdown’. These designs now feature in my first range of notecards, which I am pleased to say are printed on paper created using recycled coffee cups. Sustainability and reducing waste is really important to me and my small business. I use recycled, compostable or biodegradable materials whenever I can.

Going to bed with Harrison Spinks

The New Velocity Collection

20050FE9-A2C6-40AE-9BC7-F21F8FB5F3C3

I love my bed and find it incredibly hard to get out of it in the morning. I am a nocturnal creature, late to bed and late to rise, one of my downfalls. Our new mattress isn’t helping this situation at all. The old mattress was way too hard for our liking so we bought a sponge topper for it as a makeshift to make it more snuggly. I can’t tell you though what a difference our new Velocity mattress is in it’s replacement.

We used to wake up feeling a little achy assuming it was down to our running and age. Now we have realised a lot of it was down to the old mattress as we are now feeling much more spritely in the morning. My lower back does’t ache through the night either and once my head hits the pillow I’m gone until morning. This may of course all be coincidental but since the arrival of our new mattress my sleeping has certainly improved.

A little bit about

IMG_9690

I hadn’t realised that one of the most established luxury bed makers in the UK was just down the road from me in Yorkshire. Set up in 1840 it is a fifth-generation family business, employing over 500 people including farmers, craftspeople, and a team who still sew and side-stitch the mattresses by hand.  The beds start life on the 300-acre farm where they rear their own sheep and grow hemp and flax to provide them with sustainable fillings for many of their luxury mattresses.

It has been merited with the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise in Innovation, Sustainable Development and International Trade. One of UK’s most established bed makers, it has  launched a new collection of nine 100% recyclable mattresses, The Velocity Collection.

The New Velocity Collection

Sustainability is key in this new range.

The collection fulfils any expectation a traditional Harrison Spinks mattress
would offer with the convenience of next day delivery.

Each mattress is handcrafted in Yorkshire and include natural and sustainable fillings.  All  mattresses are 100% recyclable, thanks to the glue free Cortec™ Quad springs meaning the mattresses are zero to landfill.

What did I choose?

Velocity 7250 turn free gentle support

When asked which mattress we’d prefer, we opted for the gentle support, also available in firm and medium. After much huffing and puffing, no not what you may might think (!!), we got it up our very small staircase although the mattress can be delivered rolled too which is so much easier for moving around. I have given our bedroom a little makeover by painting a few walls, rearranging my gallery wall, adding some new furniture and new lighting. Our new mattress is the icing on the cake.

My bedroom, my new mattress and my haven…

Once you have ordered your mattress, it offers a free 24 hour delivery service with the option to have your old mattress taken away.

Transforming my kitchen with Lapicida

How BBC One’s ‘Best House in Town’ brought The Meadows and Lapicida together

‘Matchlessness made in heaven’

IMG_8091

A few years ago The Meadows won a BBC’s ‘Best House in Town’. The programme was about houses that stood out from the crowd, quirky and had the wow factor. They pitched it as ‘a warm aspirational programme that would show all types of homes off’ and would follow a group of judges looking around each property. The judges would share their thoughts and choosing a winner from each category before deciding an overall ‘Best House in Town’ at the end of the week.

Perfect I thought, it had this place written all over it.  Before we were selected to take part,  the production company were coming to check that the house was suitable! Relaxed and cool on the outside and total mess inside, the BBC were coming to my house!!!!!! I was beyond excited and bloody determined to get chosen. I went out and spent a fortune on new makeup and cleaned the house for days. The house was as ready as it could be, I was as glam as I could be (not easy to achieve).  It all went well.

Then there was the wait, it seemed forever but I finally got the email to say that we had been selected. I was over the moon and yet knew we had our work cut to be national TV worthy-no pressure at all! I am unbelievably competitive so I was determined to win.

IMG_3216 2

Filming was spread over a week and by the end of it, we knew who had won. It was a exciting week to say the least if a little exhausting. My poor children and husband weren’t allowed to make any mess, it was hell for them.

I had never before…

  • Had a film crew in my house
  • Been interviewed in front of camera
  • Taken part in a national TV programme
  • Won a competition on national TV

Yes we won!!! The bloody hard work paid off.  It was a lot of fun as what followed on the day of the broadcast was lots of interviews and press coverage. A lovely piece was written about the programme and me by Sharon Dale, Yorkshire Post Interiors Editor. ‘Matchlessness made in heaven’ a catchy title that summed this house perfectly. The Interiors and Garden supplement it appeared in was sponsored by Harrogate based Lapicida, a leading specialist in wall and floor surfaces, supplying new and antique natural stone alongside ceramics and new-generation porcelains.

An introduction to Lapicida

The showroom of dreams

Lapicida_Harrogate-Showroom_First-day-HR (11)

As a result of the article, I was invited to go and look around Lapicida’s most amazing showroom with a view to possibly with working with them. My eclectic, maximalistic, no rules approach to interiors caught Lapicida’s eye. They were keen to appeal to a different market and not just to their top end clientele. That is where I would come in. Not only does Lapicida offer top end marble and stone, they offer more affordable porcelain versions. This allows people to mix premium marble with the more affordable porcelain, achieving the same effect for a fraction of the cost.

My kitchen

The before

I designed my kitchen with a lovely old local cabinet maker about 17 years ago. I wanted deep set shaker style cabinet doors, oak worktops, red Aga, black and whites tiles and open shelving.  Kooky farmhouse kitchen was the look I was going for. The kitchen served us well over the years and was always well received on Instagram with it’s cosy, colourful, unconventional style. But like anything, as the years went by, it began to look tired. The wood started rotting near the sink and it was looking shabby. Fresh licks of paint kept the kitchen looking ok but it was time for a bigger change.

My kitchen makeover

And so the work begun

This makeover was a perfect opportunity to work with Lapicida. Mike the builder removed the kitchen hood, cupboard and worktops and stripped everything back from waist up. This would open up the kitchen making it appear wider and lighter. I was going to use the beautiful San Marino marble for all the work surfaces, up-stands, window sill and splash-back behind the hob. San Marino marble features gorgeous  tones and detailed veining. It is a really versatile product, which is a popular choice for interior surfaces as well as bespoke furniture items such as baths. I couldn’t believe that this beautiful piece of stone in the picture below was going to become my work surface. I was beyond excited.

The marble had been cut, prepared and treated by craftsmen at the Lapicida workshop –renowned for combining high-tech processes with traditional stonemasonry techniques, and was ready to be installed.

Time for the marble installation.

IMG_2996

IMG_2866

I was so excited to see how the marble was going to be installed. A local templater and installer was commissioned for the project. He arrived with the marble cut and ready to fit. They worked tirelessly all day to complete the job. The kitchen was unfolding in front of my eyes.

The marble was in place

IMG_0208 copy

IMG_3922

The marble was now in place and it was time to finish the kitchen off. I gave the walls a final coat of paint and then painted the units in the same colour, one emulsion and the other eggshell. I used the beautiful ‘Up Up Away’  from Earthborn Paints.  A lovely warm white that worked beautifully with the gentle tones of the marble. The shelves were made out of my old worktops and we decided on a floating style to keep them looking less fussy. Our builder made our cooker hood to fit around the extractor fan and to sit nicely between the top shelves. I painted this the same colour as the wall.

We kept everything in the kitchen light – the walls, worktops and units. The main objective with the makeover was keeping the kitchen as fresh as possible and opening it up. A good decision.

My kitchen now

IMG_8080The San Marino has the most beautiful veins running through it. Here you can see the marble worktop around the sink, the up-stand and window sill. Also our floating shelves made out of the old worktops.

IMG_8081

The beautiful soft tones of the marble, wall and units works well with my greenery, glasses and pottery.

We are so happy with the kitchen transformation. It is now a beautifully bright space and the marble is so fresh. We have gained so much more work space and the kitchen is so much brighter which was the objective.

Our kitchen finished

The Earth Collection by Earthborn Paints

IMG_8094

How I transformed my kitchen with Up Up Away by Earthborn paints

AD:In partnership with Earthborn Paints.

I had been toying with the idea of changing the kitchen for sometime. It was very photogenic and always a hit with my Instagram followers but the reality was it was impractical, lacked work surfaces and was dark. We had our kitchen bespoke made by a lovely cabinet maker about 17 years ago. We worked together to come up with a shaker style kitchen with thick inset. I planned to paint the units a deep emerald green and walls to match (you can see in the picture below the original green I used). We opted for gorgeous handmade oak worktops and pine shelving and top units made from recycled church pews. Over the years I tired of the dark green and went cream, then grey then darker grey. Walls too were painted many times. I had given the kitchen lots of little facelifts but it was time for some bigger changes. In August we began a larger project removing the cooker hood, the surround, the old oak work surfaces, shelving and top units (pretty much everything waist upwards)

Introducing Earthborn

Earthborn is an eco-friendly paint company making high breathability paints with low environmental impact and a palette to die for!

The range includes Claypaint (ultra matt), Lifestyle (washable emulsion), Eco Chic (furniture) Eggshell No.17 (interior wood finish), and Ecopro Masonry to name a few.  A fabulous range of 72 colours. Perfect for decorators and interior designers, they are better for the planet, our home and health. I was hooked.

The Earth Collection

I was delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Earthborn to showcase their new Earth Collection – five lovely colours inspired by the earth, the land, the sea, the sand and the clouds.

The impending kitchen makeover seemed like the perfect opportunity. I was undecided about the colour – should I go light or dark?? I was sent some tester pots, lovely colour cards and a beautiful soft brush so I could have a little play and I tried all the new colours on various walls (always test paint first as light in rooms vary and can have such an impact on colour choice).

Samples

I opted for Up Up Away, a beautifully fresh off white for all the kitchen walls. I was recommended the Lifestyle emulsion which is durable and washable, perfect for this space. It was easy to apply and covered really well and I even I roped the kids in too.

Getting messy

Decisions

I hummed and harred about what colour I should paint the units. My original mood board favoured dark with brass fittings, marble surface and white walls, I wanted sophistication and elegance in contrast to my very eclectic country kitchen. My objective in the project was to make the kitchen as light as possible so I opted to go light. Always a good idea to put a mood board together, it really gives you an idea of how all your ideas might work in unison or not!! Years ago I used a scrap books and cut out inspiring pictures from magazines. I recently found the one that was my inspiration 17 years ago, its so interesting how our tastes change.

Mood/inspiration board

Screenshot 2020-09-11 112041

I decided to use the same colour on the units as I did the walls but using an eggshell as I was painting wood. I rubbed down the units and applied an Earthborn multi purpose primer and the two coats of Up Up Away. I was instantly happy and I knew I had made the right decision. The kitchen looked so fresh and much brighter. Up Up Away is such a lovely warm white and I’m so happy with it. It is a real art to choose the right shade of white and I have often got it wrong.

Shelving

My builder used my old oak work tops and made them into shelves. We sanded them down and they really came up looking lovely. I wanted floating shelves to make it less fussy as I knew with my maximalistic ways I would be filling them up – I just can’t help myself! The beauty of a simple shelf is allowing the lovely things you put on them to sing. Glassware, ceramics and plants were placed on the shelves. Against the lovely tones of Up Up Away, the greens of the glass, pottery and plants all create a calming space. I love open shelving, a great way to showcase your favourite pieces. I always add plants to shelves as they create a softness and great for hiding corners and edges.

You can never have to many plants

I got all my lovely plants from a lovely little garden centre near York  Fields Garden Centre   and are offering an online service too for their indoor plants.

We used a stunning San Marino marble from Lapicida Stone which adds to the brightness of the room. This is our lovely Sophie Conran Portmeirion dinner-set we were bought after our wedding. It is so pretty and such a lovely treat to have it on show. I have used little accents of turquoise and greens throughout the kitchen as this works well against the red Aga that we have kept.

My love affair with pallets

Three ways to get creative with pallets

Affordable, cool and fun furniture solutions that won’t break the bank.

IMG_2556

Outdoor Pallet Sofa

I have always loved the challenge to make something out of nothing. Never having much spare cash, I have always been a keen thrifter & painter of old furniture. My biggest inspiration is the wonderful Charlotte Hedeman Guéniau when it comes to outdoor living. I came across her book on a long trip back from Cornwall at Gloucester Services (my favourite motorway services ever) called Happy Home Outside. I love her use of pallets around the garden – stylish, individual, cheap and resourceful. My first piece of furniture was a pallet sofa for my patio. Not being able to afford an outdoor sofa I decided to make one. My only expense was the pallet cushions which I bought from Amazon (euro pallet size) for £70. I built this one against a wall so didn’t even need nails. Only six euro pallets were needed – two laid side by side and another two on top of them. The final two made the back rest. I was so thrilled with it and it was so much fun to do . More importantly it was really cheap. I used cushions and throws which I already had. I demonstrated on Instagram how easy it was by using a time lapse video and it was a big sucsess with over 150k views – I was delighted.

Bringing the pallet sofa indoors

When the summer was over I decided to bring the sofa inside as I wanted to use it in the winter months. I had a space I needed filling so recreated the same thing indoors. This was to become one of the reasons we won BBC One’s Best House in Town. The judges loved this sofa as ‘it showed imagination and thinking out of the box.’ I was so happy. I really do believe that you can create a stylish, cosy home without spending a fortune.

Another pallet project

IMG_7277

My son’s bedroom

This room was a shocker I have to admit.  The room was a shit hole and I couldn’t afford a new bed and our old bed mine wasn’t working in there so I came up with the idea of making one with pallets. My design would include a bedside table on each side. My good friend Mike the builder helped me load pallets from Selco builders yard onto a trailer so I could bring them home. It nearly killed me carrying them up our very narrow stairs.  The entire bed was almost free as we aready had a mattress. I did buy a long piece of wood from B&Q builders yard to create a shelf along the headboard – my only expense. Another one of my most popular posts on Instagram.

This bed was so much fun to make. The hard bit was lugging the pallets around. I used 10 euro sized pallets. You can see how I placed them in the photos. The pallets nearest the headboard I positioned lengthways so we could use a extra length as sidetables. No nails needed other than along the top of the headboard where I attached a piece of wood on top of the upright pallets to create a shelf.

A perfect wall for lots of art.  I used a collection of prints from. Posterstore and created a fun and raunchy gallerywall, perfect for an 18 year old.

Another pallet project…

In lock-down I came up with various projects to give my bored 19 year old. I came up with the idea of the pallet swing bed. Finlay & I walked around the place trying to find the best tree. We had surprisingly good weather in March, spending much more time outside.  This gorgeous tree below was about to blossom and with the lovely sunset in the background was a perfect spot. I came up with the design and Fin built it, a perfect combination and use of lock-down time. We are so lucky to live in six acres. We always sit around the house on the patio, but sitting by this tree feels like we are somewhere else and around 7pm the sun hits the bed, it’s such a wonderful spot to enjoy the evening sun.

For this you will need…
Strong outdoor rope
2 x Euro Pallets
2 long pieces of 4×2 wood
2 x pallet cushions. (amazon)
Nails
A tree
A stepladder

The pictures are pretty self explanatory. Thread two pieces of the wood through the pallets as seen below.  Once the pallets are in place, secure with several nails until you feel it is secure.  Cut off surplus wood that is sticking out of the pallets. The length of the rope will depend on tree height and how high you want the swing.  You will need two long pieces of rope that you will need to thread through each end of the pallet . The tricky bit is threading the rope over the branch and securing with a strong knot. (you will need a few pairs of hands for this and a stepladder) Once your swing bed is secure, place the two pallet cushions on top and decorate with lots of lovely cushions and blankets. Pour yourself a lovely drink and lie back and relax.

Building a raised bed with WoodBlocX

This gorgeous raised bed took no more than a morning to make and is now a great asset to an area that was looking a little scruffy and unloved.

Qm0g8lKMSPu3devbhzK6LQ

I was asked recently by WoodBlocX if I would like to work with them and build one of their raised beds. I had a little area in the garden that just wasn’t working and I knew straight away that this would be the perfect spot. I was given the choice of various shaped beds but opted for an octagonal one. The garden planter is ideal for making raised flower, shrub or vegetable beds, It was the perfect solution and something that   hadn’t sprung to mind before.

Building the bed was like playing with giant wooden Lego bricks. The blocks arrived stacked on a pallet all wrapped and all I needed was a wooden mallet hammer, no other tools needed. Raised beds are often associated with heavy pieces of timber like railway sleepers with lots of sawing and drilling but here there was none of that.

S9hvjbcXTIaM+vCVrXHA+A

Each WoodBlocX kit includes wooden blocks of different sizes, they are pre-drilled with holes to allow for the fitting of the dowels. The blocks are built layer by layer, an easy process that doesnt take too long, infact it was fun with the music playing, sun shining and all the kids getting involved.

SUSTAINABLE AND ORGANIC

All the timber is sourced from sustainably-managed forests, and the treatment process involves no chemicals that might leak from the wood, unlike the heavily treated sleepers. The dowels are all made from recycled plastic too.

All the wooden components are made from high quality FSC certified Scots pine and the beds won’t crack or warp and are expected to last at least 15 years if not more.

FILLING THE BED

Over the years we have created our own compost. Lots of grass cuttings and general green wasted down. We managed to fill the entire bed with our own compost. It took a few hours but this was a family affair due to lock-down so I was more than happy to delegate the filling to my kids. After an hour or so we were ready to get planting.

THE PLANTS

I decided to go for ornamental plants that were striking and added a little drama to this area and offered structure.ZCkR7weUQaeGrU0Gvrm7gA

PLANT LIST

Decided to go for a little colour theme in my new raised bed. I opted for lovely deep purples, bluey greens and mauves. Buying plants in lockdown isn’t easy but our wonderful local nursery Vertigro just on the outkirts of York took my order over the phone and left all my plants on a pallet in the carpark for me to collect.

I USED THE FOLLOWING

Lavender

For it’s structure and lovely purple flowers

Sage

Deep bluey green tones and lovely shaped leaves

Blue Fescue

Amazing blue colours and form

Fritillaria

Gorgeous deep pruple delicate flower

Cordyline (purple & green)

Good all year round plant

I planned to use Palm (Trachycarpus hardy) as seen on the pallet but ran out of space so it is now sitting pretty on my patio but thought I would share as these would have really worked well tooGood all year round structure and greenery.

When planting, a good tip is to plant in groups of three or five. I used the large purple Cordyline for the centre piece, then divided the rest of the plants into three around the middle. Three green Coryline and so on so all the plants were divided around the bed evenly. I chose to spend a little more money and buy bigger plants because I am so impatient but you can buy all these plants smaller to make it cheaper. The beauty of these plants is that they will look lovely all year round. The planting took around an hour or so and looks really lovely. In a few months time the lavender will bloom and the other plants will grow and bush out.

AND RELAX…

And there you have it –  a lovely feature for this area of my garden. In half a day it really is achievable to build and plant the loveliest raised bed.

Mini living room makeover with Lombok

INTRODUCTION

I was invited down to the Lombok launch party last November to check out their amazing, made to order 7-day Furniture Service, taking bespoke to a whole new level!!! Sofas, armchairs and beds available in 35 fabrics and delivered in 7 days, this is definitely where you need to be. I wasn’t sure what to expect as it seemed too good to be true.

A LITTLE ABOUT LOMBOK

Founded in 1998, Lombok is a homeware brand selling exclusive and high-quality, handcrafted furniture, lighting and accessories.

Well-known for its traditional dark teak furniture, Lombok has expanded its range to include styles that use other materials such as reclaimed woods. Lombok products are mostly sourced from the Far East, but in recent years, have become a manufacturer in their own right with production in London. All ranges are constantly reviewed and there is an in-house interior design team to support customers with their decisions.  Kieran Hewkin has transformed the brand since 2017 with fresh energy and he also offers a mean cup of coffee and a sympathetic ear to help you through a hangover. (yes, that was me after meeting up with my very old uni friend and getting carried away on the Aperol Sprtitz the night before)

SUSTAINABILITY

Any timber used is sourced from sustainable plantations with internationally recognised certification. Lombok also take part in the Trees 4 Trees initiative, where new trees are planted for every item of furniture bought.

THE SHOWROOM

I met with Kieran and the friendly team at their large stylish and airy flagship store based in the heart of Tottenham Court Road. Lots of beautiful space to showcase all their range of furniture.

WHERE I COME IN

I teamed up with Lombok after my visit to review a piece of furniture and their new service as I was planning a little revamp in my living room. Looking for a large, comfy left-hand corner sofa that could house most of a family of five in front of a film and open fire. It is all about comfort, practicality and of course goes without saying style. I looked at my options above and instantly was drawn to the Muna. A perfect sofa from a style perspective with it’s modern lines. However comfort won me over. That was the easy decision made. Next choice was fabric which I knew was going to be tough with 35 fabrics such as velvet, vintage velvet, herringbone and brushed cottons in every hue and shade. I fell in love instantly with the vintage velvet, slightly more textured and feels like butter. Thinking about the colour scheme in my living room and trying to introduce something fresh that wasn’t grey and cream I opted for a peaceful soft aqua. It is closer to green than blue, the colour ‘calms and balances the mind and the emotions’ I had read. Against the newly painted dark grey walls, warm tones of the pines, it was going to be perfect. I love the challenge of colour and marrying up various possibilities.

A NEW LICK OF PAINT AND NEW SHELVES

My living room was looking a little tired and needed a fresh lick of paint. After months of planning to return it to white I ended up painting the entire room dark. New shelves had been added fairly recently too. After a few days filling holes from all the paintings and the room was ready to restyle and welcome it’s new arrival. A seamless 7 day service. My bespoke sofa was here!

MY NEW SOFA IN SITU

With it’s luxury feather and foam filling it really makes for the perfect place to unwind. The vintage velvet option is so soft too, I describe it as buttery, just pure luxury.

A piece of furniture never stays in one place for very long in this house. With freshly painted walls I opted to move it back under the shelving. The most gorgeous place where we can all cuddle up, read, chill and look out over the beautiful fields.

Two mini bedroom makeovers in one week

The bedrooms of Cam and Ellen were looking a little tired. I didn’t feel either of them needed an entire redecorate but just a little freshen. This suited me on several levels, mostly cost and time. You don’t need to do the whole hog of repainting every wall and ceiling and changing everything to create a fresh look. I thought I would share with you a few tips on how you can spruce up a kids bedroom with a little imagination that doesn’t need to cost lots of money. It took me around two days on each room. (when I say day, I mean until 3.20 school pick up)

ELLEN’S ROOM

Two day mini-makeover

Only a couple of years ago I created my favourite room in the house. We knocked down a wall and made two small bedrooms into one huge and bright room perfect for Ellen to hang out with her friends. Very much the envy of her brothers. I went down the bohemian route using lots of colour. I wanted something that would take her into her teens, that was different to anything I had seen and full of personality like Ellen. The headboard bought on Gumtree and transported from Devon to York by a lovely man in a van was my triumph piece, I will never tire of it. Its owner had it shipped over from Hong Kong, an original 60’s piece however I did paint it bright turquoise. With a feast of colour, artefacts, toys, lovely carpet from Oxfam and amazing bed linen, we created something gorgeous.

IMG_3045

This year though the grey wall was starting to look tired and in need of a re-paint and cupboards and drawers overflowing with stuff that was never used. The old gallery wall was made with picture railings and it got in the way and looked messy. My aim was to re-do three walls, patch up the holes in the walls and freshen it all up.

The Gallery Wall

IMG_6498

8T5EEs06TQeqVGkEXNn18A

I removed the shelves, filled the holes and rubbed them down and then repainted in white. I laid all the pictures on the bed to get an idea how to position them. I always start in the middle of a wall and work out. I am old school and still use tiny nails. Command strips are another great way to fix your art to the wall and doesn’t damage it like nails. The art you see on the wall is a real mix collected over the years. There are so many companies selling fun prints that are really affordable like Desenio, The Poster Store, Eleanor Bowmer, and Hello Peagreen to name a few. Some of the pieces are my paintings and Ellen’s. I also used Cable and Cotton string lighting, butterflies and circular wall stickers from B&Q to mix it up a little. Don’t be afraid to experiment by adding different elements to your gallery wall to make it more interesting.

The Fairy Light Wall

This wall behind the big Ikea unit was looking a bit sad, the lights had given up so I created a curtain wall of fairy lights I had left over from Christmas. They are available from plenty of places like WeRChristmas and Lights 4 Fun. I hung them so they would fall in the middle of the wall and used small tacks to hold them up. I then used a faux pink garland of roses along the top to hide the wires from Home Sense. A few years ago we used a company called La La Lab where you can get your photos changed into Polaroids which look really cool. Ellen and I chose a favourite few and using mini wooden pegs attached the photos randomly to the wires. Such an effective and easy way to display your photos and create a warm glowing feel good wall personal to you.

The Main Wall

Finally the main wall and the one with the biggest transformation. The lovely dark wall was so striking especially against the turquoise headboard and pinks accents. Over the last few years pictures have been moved around and holes appeared. The wall needed painting. We have a simple spotty cushion and painting in Ellen’s room which looked like dalmatian spots so we decided to use this as our inspiration. I prepared the wall by again filling in all the holes, sanding them down and painting the wall white. I found a great company called Della Bella that sold really great wall stickers. I transformed the wall into a dalmatian in about half an hour. The beauty of stickers is you can remove them very easily and they won’t spoil the wall. Neon lighting is fun to use and I found these lips from Hurn & Hurn.  Paper tassel garlands are cheap and really effective.

A966D743-BD98-4AF8-929D-491CA89BEDB0

As much as we loved the dark grey wall the white spotty wall really lifts the room and makes it really bright and happy especially when the sun is shining.

CAMERON’S ROOM

A few years ago I re-wallpapered one wall with a brick effect wall paper from B&Q and painted the walls grey, put up new shelving and made a little desk from scaffold boards. I was really happy with it and so was Cam. Over the years the bed was broke, the shelves sagged. A few weeks ago, Cam said he didn’t want scaffold boards in his room anymore and wanted a proper desk and a modern room. Trying to convince a 10 year-old that scaffold boards were really cool didn’t work. These pictures above were taken just after the room was first decorated a few years ago and looking pretty fresh. The scaffold boards became a bit of a drawing board and began to look pretty scruffy, they will however be recycled into my new patio dining table.

The brief;

Gaming, strip lighting & modern

Walls

The first day was ripping out, making good, filling holes and painting. Cam and I took a trip to B&Q pretty much my second home and he chose his wall colour… Well under influence of his mother of course. Pitch Blue by Farrow & Ball which is such a gorgeous blue was chosen. This provided a lovely backdrop for the newly positioned gallery wall, which comprises of a few fun posters from Desenio, football pictures, letter boards and school photos. I think it is far nicer to personalise walls like this and make them relevant otherwise it can look like a picture from a catalogue.

The Gallery Wall

CUvyroevRzeRlsZMVY4iLw

Cam wanted graffiti of some description. On Amazon I found a company that supplies light switch stickers. He hated the pink gingham switch left from when his little sister occupied the room. We also found a company that sells wall stickers that can be personalised, both on Amazon.

Furniture

We chose a Vonhaus study bunk bed and desk to style that were both really great value for money. The bunk is a good way to give a room another dimension. I have put a little bean bag in the desk area which folds out into a single bed when he has mates over to play.

Lighting

The main request from Cam was lighting, he wanted the room to look like a gaming zone ( I know!!!) but it is his room and I let him choose. The bunk bed was a great place to attach the strip lighting I bought from Amazon which has a huge selection of colour combinations and effects.

The Bed Area

The Desk Area

The desk is a really good size and utilises the corner effectively.  The storage is perfect with draws and handy open shelving. I used different lighting on his desk such as Philips Hue lighting who I worked with last year on a garden project. This really clever strip lighting is really meant for the garden but worked beautifully along Cam’s desk. The strip lighting attached underneath Cam’s bunk bed is made up of lots of little tiny spots of light so is designed to be hidden. The Philips Hue light strip can be on show and looks really effective. You can download an app on your phone to control the strip lighting and change colours which is super cool it can also be connected to Alexa so you can voice activate it. The festoon lighting came from Lights 4 Fun and Clasohlson

A happy boy. A cool place to take his mates and will take him into his teens. When he tires of the lights and the wall art we can just remove them.

Lapicida

A little slice of heaven

Last summer I had the privilege of being asked to go and visit Lapicida, suppliers of new and antique natural stone, ceramics and new-generation porcelains. Our paths crossed when I was featured in The Yorkshire Post Interiors & Gardens supplement after winning BBC’s Best House in Town.

I had no idea what to expect and turning up in my dirty old Volvo. I drove by the entrance and parked around the corner as it looked a bit smart and my car was a little scruffy.

Wow, the outside of the showroom blew me away but nothing compared to the inside. The ooh’s and the ahh’s  flowed uncontrollably out of  my mouth.

The showroom is inspired by places they love, a mix of opulence in every colour and style, Italian architecture, French palaces, beamed rooms, enormous stone fire places, roomset after roomset showcasing every aspect of every product as authentically as they can. It is good enough to live in. A friendly welcome by the Lapicida team and then a wonderful tour by Jason Cherrington, Lapicida’s founder and director. He is so down to earth and very passionate and knowledgeable. It was such a treat to have a guided tour and learn a little about all the most amazing products. The most exciting thing for me however was that contrary to what I expected when I first entered the showroom, Lapicida is also accessible to folk like you and me…Yay!!! It’s the perfect place to mix and match premium marble and stone with more affordable porcelain and ceramic or simply by using a standalone porcelain for a fraction of the cost and still achieve the desired look. This is where I come in.

NEW PORCELAIN & CERAMIC COLLECTION 2020

In the New Year I am looking at changing the kitchen and was looking at options from Lapicida’s new collection, a gorgeous mix of new ceramic and porcelain wall and floor designs. It brings together the best of Cersaie 2019, the Bologna-based international exhibition. For those who weren’t able to make it to Italy, Jason has curated a special show in North Yorkshire featuring the best new products. His pick of 30 favourite ceramic and porcelain wall and floor tile designs will be on display at Lapicida’s Harrogate showroom until early in the new year and will form Lapicida’s New Collection of tiles, to be launched in early 2020.

When Jason showed me the new collection where the focus is on key elements, such as  colour, pattern and texture. The new collection is varied with something for everyone, and  I have been lucky enough to see it first hand so I am sharing some of my favourites products and I hope you enjoy.

My kitchen plans

There is so much more to this wonderful collection but what I like most of all is that it is attainable with marble and stone effect porcelain that doesn’t break the bank. The new collection works alone or can work perfectly  with the marble & stone.

It always comes down to making the right choice for your space. My kitchen is predominantly wood and tile creating a country shaker style. It’s a lived-in kitchen and has lots of character (a phrase I often use for ‘slightly tired and in need of a facelift’)  I want to lighten it up and give it a contemporary and fresher look. This is why I am drawn to a pale marble or the Victoria panelled ceramic tile. Everything waist up will change leaving units which I will paint.

Watch my space and I will look forward to sharing with you concept to completion.
